I can't say enough about the refinishing job that Alex did for us! Our floors were quite worn, with almost 25 years of daily traffic from kids and the dog. Alex refinished the floors and stairs in our older character home, and installed a couple of railings in staircases. He was fantastic to deal with: super friendly, responsive, and knowledgeable. We were a little unsure about the stains / finish we wanted, but Alex was extremely accommodating as we made our decision, and suggested an approach that would help us match the tone of two different kinds of wood in different rooms. He also managed to almost entirely eliminate some bad damage to the floor in one room. We are extremely happy with the results — the 100-year-old floors look like new! I would not hesitate to recommend Alex's services.

We have hardwood flooring in our house from different periods of times and we would like to restore them altogether. Alex listened carefully to what we need and had done a great job. We had this old furnace grille which didn't work anymore. Alex was able to patch with a mixture of old and new wood materials to blend in with the wood pattern of the rest of our house. What an artwork! We are very happy with the work and we will definitely recommend him to anyone with hardwood flooring refinishing and/or repairing needs!

We bought a 1920s house with original fir floors under the carpet on the top floor and staircase. The fir was in rough shape, especially the stair treads, and the landing had glued down vinyl that was a mess. The first two refinishing companies we called said the floors were beyond restoration. Alex took on the challenge and did an amazing job! We can't believe how gorgeous they are! Even the landing looks like brand new fir, and he fixed the really squeaky spots. Alex helped us find the perfect colour of stain to tie into the main floor original inlaid walnut. He fixed some cut out sections of floor that had plywood with new fir and tied it in perfectly. He was a pleasure to work with and we couldn't be happier.

Alex did a great job on two of our staircases along with some stairwell trim and a damaged floor.

The colours matched exactly and the damage was completely invisible after the repair. He was able to identify the different colours by eyeballing it as we did not have samples to provide him.

He is also very personable and easy to talk to.

We would definitely use his Services again and recommend him.

We hired Alex to install new handrails on a couple of stair cases and a full replacement of the railings on our main entrance staircase. He came in with a good quote, he gave us a heads up on arrival time everyday, gave a daily heads up on what he would be doing that day, at the end of each day he cleaned up the site area which I was particularly impressed with. At the end of the project he took care of dumping all the old material, plus gave us the opportunity to fix any other lingering tasks while he had the tools out. We ended up also getting our pony walls recapped along with fixing some damaged crown moulding from prior renovations. We’d highly recommend Alex and are planning to use him again later in the year for some other projects.

We are very happy with Alex’s work. After he finished this job we got amazing feedback from our friends. This floor was very red in the beginning and wanted to make it a darker brown. Alex didn’t disappoint, in addition to the refinish we asked to have the marble insert/transition that was very builder looking. We asked if he could make a transition that would flow better. Alex sourced the materials and created the frame finished transition. I would recommend Alex to anyone. Alex refinished our hardwood staircase and replaced all of the spindles in the staircase with nice black metal spindles. He did a terrific job and we are extremely happy with the quality of work that he provided. We are in a full home renovation and have worked with many contractors on the full home. Alex was referred to us by a flooring supplies store owner. We felt comfortable with the referral considering the source, little did we know however how totally impressed we would be with the end result. Alex’s efficient, effective approach to his profession is refreshing. Alex is clearly talented. He knows what he is doing, works to code , is creative to solve problems , is great to work with and doesn’t make a project take any longer than it has to. His work is reliable and will last the test of time. He makes what he does look easy because he knows what he is doing. I would not hesitate to recommend Alex for any carpentry work. Alex built an absolutely fantastic complicated stairwell railing/newel posts for us , and we liked his work so much, that we have hired Alex for more projects in our home. He has begun those projects and they are as well done as the stair railing system, done efficiently and effectively. We can’t recommend Alex highly enough !

I can’t recommend Alex’s work more highly. He really knows his stuff, and his workmanship is the best I have seen, especially with site finished flooring. I am not a big fan of pre-finished flooring with the micro bevel edges because there always seems to be a small space between where dirt and stuff can be captured. There has been or we have put in hardwood in almost every house I have lived in (presently house number 6) and the hardwood floors and installation jobs I like best are the site finished projects as there are almost no noticeable gaps/spaces.

Alex’s work seems more like art, true craftsmanship versus just an installation job and yet his pricing is good value and very competitive. His quotes are clear, and he sticks by them without surprises. I have a policy of getting a minimum of 3 quotes for a job and when I did so for my hardwood, his quote was very competitive and actually slightly cheaper when factoring in an “apples vs apples” comparison. However, the real value of selecting Alex and AF Wood floors is when you see the extreme quality of the finished product. You can also be assured Alex stands behind his work. When he did our entire main floor there was a board that had an imperfection due to some kind of debris that got into the finish coat. Alex offered to spot fix the board but if we were not 100% happy, he would redo that entire section. His repair was very good, and my wife was happy; however, as I am a bit of an extreme perfectionist Alex could tell that I wasn’t 100% satisfied so without any discussion he simply said “…I want you to be happy, I can see you are not sure, so I am just going to redo this entire section” and he did. The result was the refinished section was perfect and Alex ensured we were 100% satisfied. I don’t think of Alex as a “flooring guy” he is more like a “Flooring Master”.

I am sorry to see his business moving out to the west coast, but I know his new clients will be very lucky to have chosen him and his work will more than meet their expectations.
