Wooden Countertop Resurfacing
I was called in to resurface this thirteen-foot long slab of Bubinga hardwood in the Shaughnessy area of Vancouver, British Columbia. The finish had major defects in it, such as bubbles and uneven sheen throughout. It had to be sanded down to bare wood using my hardwood floor sanding machines.
The countertop was final sanded with a 6″ sander to 180 and 220 grit. A pore filler was used to fill in the grain on this wood. This promotes a much flatter appearing surface.
Multiple coats of oil-based polyurethane were applied, and each dried coat was abraded with 300 grit between coats. The client initially requested gloss (shown in gallery), but later settled on satin (also shown). I finalized everything by polishing the polyurethane with 2500 grit abrasive, and finally buffed it with polishing compound. The polished wooden surface yielded something resembling a pearl finish.
