Modern Railing Project in Deep Cove

Following a flood and a variety of renovations, this beautiful Deep Cove home had gone without railings for well over a year. It was time for my clients to find a contractor that could give them what they wanted: A clean, modern, minimalist railing. There are no visible screws, plugs or fasteners. The white oak posts and railings are mitered together for a seamless and smooth appearance. The joinery was very challenging but also rewarding. This was a time consuming labour of love. I was very happy that my clients trusted me to try new techniques and fasteners.

I used dowel joinery in most joints, which created an extremely solid assembly. The newel posts were fastened with a special invisible fastener system that required precise finessing to get just right. Once assembled, all square edges were smoothed off with a 1/8” radius, which makes these feel very comfortable. A custom color was mixed to perfectly match the natural white oak floor. These railings took me 8 full days to install and finish. I’m very proud of this project.

Bottom left photo: the metal “lug” is a hidden post fastener. Extremely strong if it can be fastened to the framing underneath.

Bottom right photo: The top of the newel posts have wooden dowels that connect to the railings. This is another example of an extremely strong joint which eliminates the need for screws and screw plugs.
